NEWS ARCHIVE

The home page was getting awfully crowded, so it seemed like it was about time to thin it out, archive a few things, and make our site easier to read for newcomers. But the story of Soma is (we think) critical to knowing what it's about, so we're storing everything here for now for posterity. No doubt it will get moved again later when we get a proper website up and running with...you know...a menu and stuff...

...it's begun

Dec 25, 2008

Invading AngelsMerry Christmas to our friends and fans.

Everyone here at Soma Games wishes you a truly magnificent holiday - one where faith, friends, and family are all blended together into a steaming hot cup of egg nog.

We are also absolutely ecstatic to share the Christmas present we got with all of you: Soma Games is now officially working on our first game.

Maybe I should rephrase that - the people at Soma are now officially being PAID to work on our first game. Up to now, this operation has been 100% volunteer and our efforts to raise the money needed to get rolling were significantly impeded by the economy going into defib. The writing, the programming, the marketing...it's all been done out of love and faith that we would get the traction we needed when the time was right. So it seems, that Christmas is the right time...

C.S. Lewis and others have suggested that Christmas is best understood as an invasion - the moment in time when God violently breaches the veil between Heaven and Earth, an airdrop of invaluable cargo and personnel deep into enemy occupied territory. It's a very compelling image and it makes me think so very differently about 'the reason for the season.' (I'd suggest you take a moment to read Rev 12 to see Christmas from a totally different angle...) Some folks have also been talking about Soma Games as a kind of cultural invasion - an aggressive, deliberate thrust into a business and a demographic that is openly hostile to anything even remotely related to Jesus. The symbolism of this 'coincidence' of timing shouldn't be overlooked...

Of course we still have a tremendous amount of work to do, as great as this news is, we're by no means in the clear. This initial round of funding is designed to build a series of iPhone games; baby steps toward our first console game - Arc. So we'll be building a series of prequels, each of increasing complexity and scope, all intended to progressively unfold Arc's back-story and set a stage.

So keep your eyes open in the coming months for several tidbits. Parts of the storyline, artwork, technical specifications, all sorts of things. We'll be pushing some of these items to our website visitors (you), but not everything. So if you really want to stay up on all that's coming out, you'll want to keep an eye on all of our channels.

But for now, we just wanted to share our great news and reach out to the folks who helped get us here. May you have a blessed Christmas and may 2009 be your best ever.

Lucky Start Ups.Com Interview

Nov 19, 2008

We had a great interview with LuckyStartUps.com and we really want to thank Dennis and Aronado for taking such great care of us. You can see the interview here.

What's best of all is that this interview and the momentum it generated led directly to the post on Christmas...

...

As part of our interview with Lucky Start Ups, we decided to make a special offer to that audience, and then just open it up to everyone. Check it out here. The promo code box is really just there so we can try to see where folks came from, but it's not required. If you came from that interview, enter LSU. If not...tell us where you DID come from, Facebook, Google, whatever.

IcePowered.Com Interview

Oct 25, 2008

Patrick over at IcePowered contacted us after a few posts on a forum and took the initiative to do an interview with their site. I gotta say, Patrick went right for the meaty stuff. No beating around the bush - just good, deep questions that really required thoughtful answers. I can't begin to express how much I appreciate that. Check it out here.

Soma Concept Art Included in Virtual Concept Art

Oct 1, 2008

We were so excited to hear about the creation of a new publisher focused on 'Christian Speculative Fiction' called Marcher Lord Press. But we were absolutely smitten to hear that we were asked to contribute some of our concept art to their launch title, a virtual coffee table book that featured incredible Christian art from all over the world.

Front Page Mention on Christian News Northwest

Aug 8, 2008

Christian News Northwest did a front page story called Getting Serious About Gaming and we were mentioned as part of the growing trend in the market. Not exactly a feature story, but the word says not to despise small beginnings and this is the first time our name appeared in print.

See a related piece from the same issue here: Christians Get In The Game.

Soma Games on Nite Beat TV show

Aug 1, 2005

Literally six days after Soma Games was conceived of (at least by me) I had the chance to be on a TV show out of Boston called Nite Beat. See the interview here.
